Ludington Blue Spruce Motel

Parachute from an airplane and land at the Blue Spruce. You won't need a car to enjoy Ludington.  350 footsteps to Stearns Beach.  Three blocks to downtown.  Three blocks to the Marina and Waterfront Park. Try it!

And, if need be, we have one of the best urgent hospitals in Michigan, just 2 miles away.

Here is how the Blue Spruce is different from the usual motel:

--You will live in a neighborhood of fantastic houses, owned by people who enjoy the beach and the downtown shops and restaurants.

--You can park four steps from your door.  You won’t be able to lug suitcases up stairs and down halls. But it’s ok.  You can get your exercise on the beach.

--Your room will have a storm door.  Lots of light!

--You can sit outside your room and enjoy the elegant homes around you.

--You can ask for white gloves to check if your room’s spotless.

--You’ll walk on cozy laminate-wood floors.

--You drink cold bottled water, supplied by us and stored in your fridge.

--You’ll rock on your Amish rocker. More exercise.

--You can pet knotty pine walls that are 68 years old

--You can carry your just-caught fish to our freezer.

Here is how we are the same as a usual motel:

--Complimentary wireless Internet

--Cable TV

--Active ice machine

--Air conditioners

--Coffee pot under bed (just want to check if you’re reading)

--Iron and board on request

--Owner available for special requests: flowers for anniversary and birthday

Here are our most unusual features:

--Trail angel available

Some facts about the Ludington Blue Spruce Inn

We rent both motel rooms and an entire house;  both are on the property.   The motel has six rooms. The house has two floors, which can be rented separately or as a whole.  It is one fantastic house.  The first floor has high ceilings, art deco baths, all renovated.  The apartment isn’t renovated yet, but it is trying to be.  I would call it “nice.”  We can rent rooms on the first floor as well.  Ask about it (it’s complex to write, but easy to verbalize).

Ludington Blue Spruce Inn History

in 1866 Patrick M. Danaher, a lumber contractor, constructed the first home in Ludington on our inn’s site.   He then not only built a successful lumber company, but he sired five sons and served as mayor of Ludington.  His obituary notes that he died at his residence at the age of 65.   I like to think he chose our dune rise for his home because it provided a sweeping view of Lake Michigan, yet was removed from the worst gale winds.

Our motel unit was built in 1949 for a contractor’s wife.  She named it the Blue Spruce Motel and developed a place that her guests loved.  She didn’t look far off for the name but rather to the blue spruces that still tower over the house.  My daughter and I bought the motel in 2009 and renamed it the Ludington Blue Spruce Inn.  We treasure the original sign, a jazzy retro piece, and a valuable collectable.

Some things we can’t do:

--We can’t house pets. But we love them.

--We can house smokers, but not their cigarettes.
